Biography

Feb 2025

Leonard Ross is a Whangārei-based sculptor and the founder of Kaika Studios. His practice explores the symbiotic tension between the built environment and the organic world, creating large-scale sculptural forms that function not just as objects, but as living habitats.

Transitioning from a career in complex systems design, Ross brings a rigorous, methodical approach to organic form-finding. Where he once architected digital solutions and workflows, he now engineers physical ecosystems. His work is characterized by the use of high-performance pumice composites—a material choice that grounds his sculptures in the geological narrative of New Zealand while allowing for bold, fluid durability.

Artist Statement

The Philosophy of Living Systems My work seeks to frame nature, not contain it. I am fascinated by the resilience of flora and the permanence of stone. By integrating planting voids and autonomous water systems into structural forms, I create “living sculptures” that evolve with the seasons.

The Within series challenges the viewer to look beyond the surface—into the voids and shadows where life takes hold. Whether through the play of water or the growth of native epiphytes, the sculptures are designed to participate in their environment, changing their character as light and weather shift across the landscape.

Current Studio Focus

Leonard is currently advancing the Bold Botanics series, moving from prototype to limited-edition release. His studio research is focused on hydraulic integration—developing seamless methods to embed water flow into vertical forms—and optimizing his pumice-cement formulations for greater structural resilience. He is also exploring new display methodologies (plinths and mounts) to ensure these works command their space in the landscape.
