The Philosophy

A commission is more than a purchase; it is a collaborative exploration of space, light, and narrative. At Kaika Studios, we do not simply place objects in a garden. We engineer forms that respond to the specific topography and hydrology of your site.

Whether for a private estate, a public garden, or a corporate courtyard, a bespoke commission offers the opportunity to integrate specific botanical elements and create a focal point that is uniquely yours.

The Process

1. Discovery & Site Vision

Every project begins with a conversation. We discuss your site, the sightlines, the environmental conditions (wind, light, soil), and the story you wish to tell. For local projects, this includes a site walk-through. For remote commissions, we work with detailed topographical plans and imagery.

2. Conceptual Exploration & Engineering

Once the brief is defined, we move to the design phase. We develop 1-2 concept models (digital or physical) and provide a detailed feasibility assessment. This phase explores scale, material composition, and hydraulic integration. Note: A preliminary design fee applies to this phase, ensuring a rigorous exploration of concepts before fabrication begins.

3. Fabrication & Installation

Upon approval of the concept, fabrication begins at our Whangārei studio. Utilising our high-performance pumice composites, the work is cast, polished, and tested. We manage the entire installation process, from foundation engineering (using low-impact screw piles where necessary) to the final hydraulic commissioning.
