Void Within©

Concept & Artistic Vision

Void Within” is an elegant and minimalist sculpture that captivates the viewer with its fluid yet commanding form. Standing 2.5m high, it is a testament to the harmony between absence and presence. The sculpture is meticulously crafted from pumice-based cement, showcasing a smooth, continuous outer surface with a void carved from its centre.

The elliptical form is achieved by subtracting one ellipsoid shape from another, creating a dynamic interplay of curves and hollows that invites exploration from every angle. This sculpture-planter hybrid is designed to be a versatile centrepiece in any garden or outdoor setting.

Its open central void can hold a range of decorative elements or serve as a vessel for a carefully selected plant, allowing nature to become a living part of the artwork. Whether it cradles a slow-growing bonsai or cascading seasonal flowers, Void Within serves as a unique focal point that balances the rawness of concrete with the delicacy of nature.

Inspiration & Representation

“Void Within” draws inspiration from the concept of negative space and the philosophical exploration of emptiness and form. By removing rather than adding shapes, the piece embodies the idea that what is absent can be as powerful as what is present.

This interplay of presence and absence reflects a journey of introspection, reminding us to find beauty not just in what we see, but also in what is hidden or missing.

The elliptical design also symbolises the cyclical nature of life and growth, with its continuous, unbroken form suggesting eternity and renewal. This piece is a meditation on balance and contrast between solid and void, smoothness and texture, stillness and growth. Through this duality, Void Within invites viewers to consider their own relationship with the spaces they inhabit and the unseen forces that shape their experience.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Material: Pumice-based low-carbon cement binder for durability.
Finish: Smooth, weather-sealed surface with a natural pumice texture, ensuring longevity in outdoor environments.
Technique: Void Within is hand-formed and painstakingly refined by the artist. Its shape emerged through an intuitive process guided by the behaviour of the material rather than imposed upon it.

Installation & Placement Considerations

Weight: Estimated between 1.5 – 2 tons, requiring placement on a stable, level surface.
Base: Mounted on a 200mm high wooden platform
Placement Considerations: Ideally positioned to frame a landscape element, structure, or natural focal point to enhance its interplay with the environment.

Interactive Elements

The void frames the environment, encouraging viewers to look through the sculpture rather than just at it. The integrated planter transforms the piece into a living sculpture, evolving with the changing seasons. The smooth, continuous curves invite touch and interaction, making it a multi-sensory experience.

Progress & Behind-the-Scenes

Void Within began as a digital sketch — a symmetrical, meditative form designed to speak to the balance between void and presence, stillness and flow. Yet, in the process of bringing it to life in concrete, the work began to speak back. Rather than forcing the form to fit the ideal, the artist allowed the material to guide the evolution of the shape.

What emerged was not what was first imagined — it was more. More real, more tactile, more reflective of the living interaction between artist, material, and time. The minor imperfections, the gentle asymmetries, are not flaws but markers of that collaboration.

This is a sculpture that reminds us: transformation is not a loss of control, but a deepening of connection.
