Portal of Perception
Concept & Artistic Vision
“Portal of Perception” is an elegantly crafted sculpture that merges the strength of pumice-based cement with the organic beauty of natural form. Standing 1.4 meters wide and 1 meter tall, this piece draws attention through its balanced proportions and intriguing interplay between its solid exterior and the void within.
The sculpture rests on an 80cm high base, grounding it firmly while subtly lifting its elliptical form above the ground, suggesting an upward movement.
The elliptical void carved into the centre is a focal point, inviting viewers to pause and reflect. Rather than functioning as a window to the other side, the void serves as a contemplative space, encouraging a journey inward rather than outward.
As sunlight moves across the sky, the shadows cast by the sculpture dance and change, creating a dynamic interplay of light and form.

Inspiration & Representation
The inspiration behind Portal of Perception lies in the concept of self-reflection and the beauty found in simplicity. The piece explores the relationship between solid and void, exterior and interior, form and function.
By carving out a central void, the sculpture invites viewers to reflect on what is not immediately visible—the unseen aspects of themselves and their surroundings.
The elliptical form symbolises harmony and balance, suggesting an eternal cycle of growth and renewal. The interplay of shadows and light on its textured surface adds a tactile quality, drawing viewers to touch and engage with the sculpture.
Portal of Perception is not merely an object to be observed but an experience to be felt. It challenges viewers to contemplate the beauty of simplicity, the power of absence, and the ever-changing relationship between the natural and the crafted.
